Phosphor bronzes, or tin bronzes, are alloys containing copper, tin and phosphorous.  The addition of tin increases the corrosion resistance and strength of the alloy. The phosphorous increases the wear resistance and stiffness of the alloy. The phosphor bronzes have superb spring qualities, high fatigue resistance, excellent formability and solderability, and high corrosion resistance. They are primarily used for electrical products; other uses include corrosion-resistant bellows, diaphragms, and spring washers.
Die-Cut Products offers phosphor bronze shims and precision stampings in a broad spectrum of grades, types and tempers for your custom fabrication needs.  All materials are available with full chemical and physical test reports right from the mill, providing melt and heat/lot data.  Need DFARS-compliant material?  We offer that too!

Benefits of Phosphor Bronze

Phosphor bronze is used for springs, bolts and various other items used in situations where resistance to fatigue, wear and chemical corrosion are required (e.g., a ship’s propellers in a marine environment). The alloy is also used in some dental bridges.
Springs are often made out of phosphor bronze because the alloy can withstand repetitive motion and still maintain shape. Large springs used in industrial machinery are often made out of phosphor bronze because they also are more resistant to strain than non-alloy components. These features also encourage the use of phosphor bronze to make structural components such as fasteners.  At Die-Cut Products it is these characteristics that allow us to use this material for spring-type applications, clips, diaphragms, and similar applications when stamping from sheet and coil product.
Bolts are often made out of phosphor bronze because they can be expected to last without breaking down. The industrial uses of such bolts include fasteners for machines, structures, and within electrical systems because of their high conductivity. Industrial machinery that regularly handles chemicals also can benefit from the use of this bronze, because it also is resistant to many chemicals.  These characteristics allow Die-Cut Products to produce shims, spacers, and washers that will work with the fasteners you’re already using in your design and application.
Die-Cut Products stocks a variety of phosphor bronze grades and tempers, including annealed, quarter-hard, half-hard, half-tempered, extra-hard, spring temper, and others.  If you have a specialty need for a grade or temper of phosphor bronze not listed here please let us know, and we’ll be happy to assist you.
