Low-carbon steel material is available in extremely accurate thickness ranges and various tempers.  This material is universally used for automobile and truck axle shims, for tool and die alignment purposes, arbor spacers, and where combined hardness, flatness and accuracy is important.  Low-carbon steel is the most common material used for commercial grade shim applications, and is typically the most cost effective.  Spring steel material is often used for spring clips and other applications where rigidity and tensile strength are of importance.
We offer low-carbon steel shims and precision stamping in thicknesses ranging from 0.001″ up to 0.250″ in the following grades:

  • 1008/1010 low-carbon steel
  • 1040-1050 low-carbon steel
  • 1075 Spring Steel, including blue-tempered
  • 1095 Spring Steel, including blue-tempered
  • Structural steel grades (such as A-36 and per ASTM A283 Grade D)
  • 4130/4140 Aircraft grade low carbon steel
  • High strength/low alloy (per ASTM A572 and ASTM A588)

We stock a broad spectrum of low-carbon steel grades, types and tempers for your custom fabrication needs.  All materials are available with full chemical and physical test reports right from the mill, providing melt and heat/lot data.  Need DFARS-compliant material?  We offer that too!

Benefits of Low-Carbon Steel & Spring Steel

Key benefits of using low-carbon steel is cost and availability.  CRS materials offer a wide range of tensile strengths at an affordable cost.  These materials can also be fabricated in a wide range of methods such as water jet cutting, laser cutting, stamping or fine blanking, Wire EDM, and others.  Low-carbon steel also lends itself nicely to forming, drawing, and flanging, and is the most common, most versatile, and quite often lowest-cost option when you require shims, precision stampings, spacers, washers, and other similar products.
Spring steel alloys feature the unique characteristic of being able to withstand considerable twisting or bending forces without any distortion. Products made from these steel alloys can be bent, compressed, extended, or twisted continuously, and they will return to their original shape without suffering any deformation.
Die-Cut Products stocks a variety of low-carbon steel grades and tempers, including quarter-hard, half-hard, full-hard annealed, spring, blue-tempered, aircraft, and others.  If you have a specialty need for a grade or temper of low-carbon steel not listed here please let us know, and we’ll be happy to assist you.
